Poland’s presidential runoff is nearing its conclusion, with tens of thousands of people joining rival rallies in the capital city of Warsaw on Sunday. The two main candidates vying for the presidency, Rafał Trzaskowski and Karol Nawrocki, have been drawing large crowds to their respective marches.
Trzaskowski, a pro-European Union mayor of Warsaw, supports abortion rights and LGBTQ+ inclusion. He vowed to work towards developing Polish industry and strengthening ties with European partners such as France and Germany.
Nawrocki, a conservative historian and former boxer, is backed by the national conservative Law and Justice party. His supporters describe him as a symbol of traditional values and promise to restore “normality.”
However, Nawrocki’s candidacy has been marred by controversy, including allegations of swindling an elderly man out of his apartment and participating in a brawl involving football hooligans.
The White House recently released photos of Nawrocki meeting with US President Donald Trump, sparking criticism from Trzaskowski. The pro-EU candidate argued that Nawrocki is not fit to represent the nation as its president.
The runoff election is expected to be close and consequential for Poland’s future. Recent polls show Trzaskowski and Nawrocki running neck-and-neck, making it impossible to predict the outcome.
