Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has won a parliamentary vote of confidence, securing his government’s survival after a presidential election defeat. The confidence vote came just days after the stinging loss of key ally Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski to nationalist historian Karol Nawrocki.
Tusk had called for the vote to prove his government’s stability amidst speculation about its future. With 243 lawmakers backing his coalition and only 210 opposing it, Tusk has secured a simple majority needed to stay in power.
The confidence vote is seen as a crucial test of Tusk’s leadership after his presidential ally Trzaskowski lost to Nawrocki, who promised to block the prime minister’s reformist agenda. US President Donald Trump has also backed Nawrocki.
Tusk had promised to continue implementing reforms aimed at reversing previous judicial changes and promoting women’s rights, but faced opposition from outgoing President Andrzej Duda and now Nawrocki. The vote marks a significant challenge for Tusk’s government, which has struggled to deliver on its promises since taking power in December 2023.
The outcome of the confidence vote leaves Tusk with a tough road ahead, as he must navigate negotiations with his coalition and address criticism about his government’s lack of progress.
