Polish Presidential Election: Rafał Trzaskowski Wins First Round

The first round of Poland’s presidential election saw Rafał Trzaskowski win with 30.8% of the vote, followed by Karol Nawrocki with 29.1%, according to preliminary exit polls. The two candidates will face each other in the second round on June 1.

Other candidates, including Slawomir Mentzen and several women, also took part in the election. However, turnout was lower than expected, reaching only 50.69% as of 5 pm on Sunday.

During a press conference, the State Election Commission reported three incidents: two elderly people died at polling stations, while an aggressive man caused a brawl at another station.

The campaign was marked by contentious topics such as security, migration, and social issues. Rafał Trzaskowski faced controversy over election spots prepared by an NGO, which he distanced himself from.

Poland’s eligible voters numbered 28 million, but the turnout was lower than in previous elections, reaching only 64.5% in 2020.

The State Election Commission will report on results at press conferences starting Monday and Tuesday. If the turnout is high, it may take up to two days for official election results to be announced.
