A groundbreaking 50-year study of 78,284 men has confirmed that poor semen quality is a significant risk factor for reduced life expectancy. Researchers at Copenhagen University Hospital found that men with the best semen quality could expect to live two to three years longer than those with lower semen quality.
The study, which analyzed data from 1965 to 2015, assessed semen volume, sperm concentration, and motility. The results showed a clear correlation between semen quality and life expectancy, with men having higher semen quality living up to 2.7 years longer on average.
Lead researcher Dr. Lærke Priskorn stated that the study identifies “another access point” for preventative measures that could lengthen a man’s life. The researchers believe that oxidative stress may be the culprit behind poor semen quality and suggest that monitoring this stress and adopting measures to maintain a balanced redox state could be key to achieving both high fecundity and healthy aging.
The study has been published in the journal Human Reproduction, providing new insights into the relationship between semen quality and life expectancy.
