Pope Calls for End to War in Sudan Amid Humanitarian Crisis

Pope Francis has issued a call for an end to the war in Sudan, where thousands have been killed and millions displaced since April 2023. The conflict between rival militaries has resulted in heavy fighting, leveling towns and cities, and claiming tens of thousands of lives.

The situation in Sudan is dire, with at least 12.4 million people uprooted from their homes, including over 3.3 million refugees. The UN aid cooperation office warns that the country is trapped in a humanitarian crisis, with 30 million people needing aid.

Pope Francis has also appealed for peace in other war-torn countries, including Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Myanmar. He expressed his support for Lebanon, which he described as “tragic civil war” that began fifty years ago, calling on God’s help to bring peace and prosperity.

The Pope’s appeal comes during a time of convalescence at Casa Santa Marta, where he has been recovering since mid-February.
