Pope Calls for Prayer and Fasting for Peace in Ukraine and Holy Land

The Vatican has announced a day of prayer and fasting for peace in Ukraine, the Holy Land, and around the world. The call comes from Pope Leo XIV, who is marking his 100th day as pope.

On August 22, Catholics are asked to observe a day of fasting and prayer for peace, particularly in light of ongoing conflicts in these regions. The pope has invoked the intercession of Mary, Queen of Peace, to bring about reconciliation and an end to violence.

The pope’s announcement was made during his general audience on August 20, where he emphasized the importance of prayer and fasting in seeking world peace. He expressed hope that recent diplomatic efforts aimed at ending Russia’s war on Ukraine will lead to positive change.

Pope Leo XIV also spoke with reporters at a villa near Rome, where he was greeted by people who had gathered to meet him. During their conversation, he discussed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and expressed support for the Ukrainian people. He also reflected on his first 100 days as pope, describing them as a “blessing from God” and expressing gratitude for the reception he has received.
