Pope Francis is slowly regaining his strength in hospital after five weeks of treatment for double pneumonia. According to Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez, the pontiff must “relearn to speak” due to prolonged use of high-flow oxygen therapy. Despite this, Fernandez assures that Pope Francis’ overall physical condition remains stable.
The 88-year-old pope has been hospitalized since February and was initially in a life-threatening situation. He has made minor improvements in breathing and mobility, but his doctors are cautious about his return. The Vatican has not set a specific date for Pope Francis’ release from the hospital.
Francis had previously experienced several bouts of ill health over the past two years, including lung infections due to pleurisy as a young adult. He underwent surgery to remove part of one lung and has been dealing with respiratory issues ever since.
Cardinal Fernandez dismissed speculation about Pope Francis’ retirement, stating that he believes the pope will not step down. The cardinal also mentioned that doctors want to ensure the pope is 100% healthy before releasing him, as he wants to dedicate himself entirely to others during his remaining time.
The Vatican’s latest health update confirms that Pope Francis has not used mechanical ventilation for breathing since Monday and is instead receiving oxygen through a small hose under his nose.
