Pope Francis’ Condition Remains Critical, Vatican Says

Pope Francis remains in critical condition for a second day due to double pneumonia. The 88-year-old pontiff has shown an initial, slight kidney issue but is receiving treatment and improving. His prognosis remains guarded.

The pope was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on February 14 after experiencing a prolonged asthma-like respiratory crisis. He received two units of blood transfusions to address low platelet count issues associated with anaemia.

Vatican officials described the condition as “complex” due to multiple microorganisms causing the infection. The pope is receiving high-flow oxygen therapy and has not experienced further respiratory crises since Saturday.

Francis, who has been struggling with health issues for two years, had part of one lung removed as a young adult. He is particularly prone to lung infections.

Pilgrims and Vatican officials are praying for the pope’s recovery. The Diocese of Rome held a special Mass on Sunday evening to pray for Francis’ strength during this “moment of trial.”
