Pope Francis passed away on Easter Sunday, surrounded by his personal healthcare assistant, Massimiliano Strappetti, after a 38-day hospitalization. The Argentine Pope’s final hours were marked by gratitude and devotion to the people of God. In one of his last words, he thanked Strappetti for bringing him back to St. Peter’s Square.
Strappetti stayed by the Pope’s side throughout his illness and recovery at the Gemelli Hospital and Casa Santa Marta. On Easter Sunday, they attended a Urbi et Orbi blessing together, where the Pope also made an appearance on the Central Loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica.
The late Pope wanted to offer a final surprise to the 50,000 faithful who gathered in St. Peter’s Square for his last ride in the popemobile. However, he first asked Strappetti if he thought he could manage it, showing humility and seeking approval.
As the Pope exited the Basilica, he was met with a crowd of adoring faithful, particularly children. He took one final spin on the popemobile before resting for the afternoon.
According to those who were present, the Pope’s passing was peaceful and sudden, without long suffering or public alarm. The Argentine leader had always been reserved about his health.
