Pope Francis’ Funeral: What to Expect on Saturday

Pope Francis’ funeral will take place on Saturday in front of St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. The service is set to begin at 10:00 local time and will be led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the dean of the College of Cardinals.

The Pope’s body will lie in state in the Basilica before the funeral, allowing members of the public to pay their respects. Francis asked to be buried in a simple wooden casket lined with zinc, unlike his predecessors who were buried in elaborate coffins.

A nine-day mourning period, known as Novemdiales, will follow the funeral. The event is expected to draw dozens of world leaders and religious figures, alongside thousands of worshippers.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the current camerlengo, has confirmed Francis’ death after a stroke followed by irreversible heart failure. Preparations have begun for the conclave, which will elect the next Pope.
