Pope Francis remains hospitalized due to a respiratory tract infection, with the Vatican focusing on his health and recovery rather than speculation about his resignation. Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin told an Italian newspaper that unfounded rumors and speculation are circulating, but he believes there is no particular movement in this regard.
Parolin stated that the Pope’s priority is his recovery, allowing treatment to be effective. The Vatican has informed him that he can visit at any time if necessary but so far, there has been no need. Gemelli Hospital reports have indicated an encouraging recovery, and the Pope has received some official documents.
The Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, also weighed in on the situation. He emphasized that any decision regarding the Pope’s resignation would be a “completely free” choice. There is no pre-conclave atmosphere or increased discussion about potential successors, according to Fernández.
Both officials stress that the Pope’s well-being is the only thing that matters at this time.
