Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández, prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, has spoken about Pope Francis’ emotional state during his recent hospitalization. The Argentine cardinal dismissed rumors of resignation and believes that this period is part of a “new phase” in the pope’s life.
Fernandez revealed that Pope Francis passed his 36th day in the hospital receiving therapies for his lung infection, but his medical condition remains stable with small improvements in breathing and motor activity. He continues to pray, work, and receive treatment. The Vatican press office provided a brief update on Monday morning, March 21, stating that the pope’s health is stable.
As the world prays for Pope Francis’ recovery, diplomats from various countries gathered at the Gesù church in Rome to celebrate Mass for his health and well-being. Archbishop Paul Gallagher delivered a homily emphasizing the importance of detaching oneself from miserable human interests and seeking a higher light to guide us towards justice and peace.
The archbishop also spoke about the need for humanity to learn to hear the voice of conscience, as those who fought against dictatorships and injustices did so in the name of conscience. The initiative was promoted by the Taizé Community, the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity, and other organizations, aiming to pray for the health of Pope Francis and all the sick and suffering.
The Vatican announced that the Angelus address this Sunday will be given in written form, as on previous Sundays since the pope’s hospitalization. The doctors do not intend to issue another update before Monday, March 24.
