Pope Francis Hospitalized After Suffering Breathing Difficulties

Pope Francis has been hospitalized after experiencing breathing difficulties during a meeting on Friday, according to the Vatican. The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted to Gemelli hospital in Rome due to worsening bronchitis and has started treatment for a respiratory tract infection.

The Vatican announced that Pope Francis’s planned attendance at an audience on Saturday has been cancelled, as well as his visit to the Cinecittà film studios on Monday. Mass in Saint Peter’s Basilica on Sunday will instead be led by Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça.

This is not the first time Pope Francis has experienced health issues. He was hospitalized in March 2023 with acute bronchitis and again in February 2024 for health checks. The pontiff has a history of sciatic nerve pain, knee problems, and other health concerns that have affected his mobility.

Despite his frailty, Pope Francis has spoken publicly about his desire to continue serving as pope despite any health issues. He had previously stated that he would consider resigning if his health prevents him from doing his job. The Vatican’s announcement of his hospitalization comes ahead of this year’s Catholic jubilee, which is expected to intensify the pontiff’s schedule.
