Pope Francis Hospitalized Again with Respiratory Issue

Pope Francis was hospitalized on Friday after suffering a sudden episode of respiratory difficulty, but his condition improved over the weekend. The 82-year-old pontiff was put on a breathing machine and received treatment for vomiting, which caused him to aspirate.

According to Vatican sources, Francis can eat solid foods and has no fever. However, his medical picture remains complex, and his prognosis is uncertain. Doctors expect to have more information about his condition in the next 24-48 hours.

This is not Francis’s first hospitalization since becoming pope in 2013. He has struggled with lung-related issues throughout his life, including severe pneumonia and a partial lung removal as a young man.

The Vatican has released regular updates on the pope’s health, stating that his condition was improving but still unclear. The pontiff’s schedule has been cleared to accommodate his medical treatment.

Due to his respiratory issue, Francis will not lead next week’s Ash Wednesday service for only the second time in his 12-year papacy. A cardinal is expected to take his place instead.

The Holy See Press Office described the night as “peaceful” and said Francis remained alert during the episode. The pope’s condition remains a concern, but he is not considered out of danger at this point.
