Pope Francis Hospitalized for Respiratory Infection, Health Remains Fragile

Pope Francis, 88, is still hospitalised at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he is undergoing “enhanced” treatment for a respiratory infection and pneumonia. His medical team has assured journalists that the Holy Father is not out of danger due to his age and fragile health.

According to Dr. Sergio Alfieri, head of Gemelli Hospital’s medical team, Pope Francis will remain in the hospital for at least another week to recover. The 88-year-old pope has chronic diseases, including asthmatic bronchitis, that can flare up, but he continues to work, read, and sign documents while at the hospital.

Pope Francis had initially experienced respiratory symptoms, which eventually led to pneumonia, confirmed by a CT scan. However, his medical team reported no immediate danger of sepsis, a life-threatening condition caused by germs entering the blood.

Dr. Luigi Carbone, Pope Francis’s referring doctor at the Vatican, added that the pope is “fragile and not out of danger” as even minor imbalances can be problematic for him. Despite his fragile health, the medical team reported that the pope responds well to treatment and has shown resilience in his condition.
