Pope Francis has developed pneumonia in both lungs and will not participate in activities through the weekend due to his health issues. The Vatican announced on Tuesday that Francis, 88, had been admitted to a hospital in Rome after being diagnosed with a polymicrobial infection. His clinical condition continues to be complex, requiring modified treatment.
Francis initially showed symptoms of bronchiectasis and asthmatic bronchitis, which led to cortisone antibiotic therapy. However, a recent CT scan revealed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, necessitating additional medication. Despite this, Pope Francis remains in good spirits, expressing gratitude for prayers for his recovery.
In a statement, Matteo Bruni, a Vatican spokesman, confirmed that the pope rested and ate breakfast as usual but would not attend events over the weekend. Francis has delegated a prelate to participate in a Mass on Sunday in his place. This marks the fourth time he has been hospitalized at the Policlinico A. Gemelli hospital since 2021.
The pope’s medical challenges have increased in recent years, partly due to knee problems and sciatica, which often require him to use a wheelchair or walker. Francis has undergone various surgeries, including colon surgery in 2021 and abdominal surgery for a hernia in 2023. The Vatican has announced that millions are expected to visit the Vatican during the upcoming Jubilee of Faith, Penance, and Forgiveness, set to begin on Christmas Eve this year.
