Pope Francis Makes Surprise Appearance at St. Peter’s Square After Two Weeks in Hospital

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis made a surprise visit to St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, marking his first public appearance since leaving the hospital two weeks ago after a life-threatening bout of pneumonia.

The pontiff was pushed in a wheelchair to the front of the altar and waved at the crowd as he addressed them via microphone. His voice sounded stronger than expected, and he spoke into the mic twice before finally getting it working.

Francis, who is still recovering from his illness, referred to his experience with sickness during the special Jubilee Mass for the sick and health workers. He said that being ill had taught him to love and be loved without condition, and that he wanted to encourage others not to ostracize pain but instead make it an opportunity to grow together.

The pope also offered prayers for doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers who often face inadequate conditions and aggression in their work. His message of hope and support was met with a warm response from the crowd, who were touched by his surprise appearance.

Francis will continue to undergo physical, respiratory, and speech therapy, as well as treatment for a lingering lung infection, at least until he completes two months of doctor-ordered rest.
