The CEO of Mercedes-Benz, Ola Källenius, has gifted Pope Francis a new electric popemobile as a token of appreciation for the Holy Father’s efforts towards reducing carbon emissions. The vehicle is a customized, one-of-a-kind version of the electric G-Class, designed specifically to meet Pope Francis’ needs.
The gift was made possible after a year-long collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and the Vatican, who aim to convert all vehicles to emission-free by 2030. The new popemobile features a rotating seat, handcrafted interior furnishings, all-wheel drive for low-speed driving, and a retractable roof.
Pope Francis’ current vehicle is set to be replaced with this new model during his upcoming General Audiences in St. Peter’s Square. The car is designed to provide the Pope with comfort and protection from the elements while maintaining traditional touches such as its white color scheme and unique license plate SCV 1.
