Pope Francis Rests After 10 Days in Hospital for Lung Infection

Pope Francis, 88, is resting at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after a 10-day hospitalization for a complex lung infection that led to early stages of kidney insufficiency, according to the Vatican. The pope’s condition has been deemed “touch-and-go” due to his age and pre-existing lung disease.

Francis was admitted to the hospital on February 14th with bronchitis that worsened over time. Doctors diagnosed a complex viral, bacterial, and fungal respiratory tract infection, followed by pneumonia in both lungs. The pope received high flows of supplemental oxygen and two blood transfusions to increase hemoglobin levels.

Despite receiving treatment, Francis’ condition remains guarded due to the risk of sepsis, a serious infection that can arise as a complication of pneumonia. However, there has been no indication of sepsis as of Monday morning.

This marks the longest hospitalization of Francis’ papacy, and he spent 10 days at Gemelli Hospital in 2021 after undergoing colon surgery. Cardinal Timothy Dolan acknowledged Francis’ fragile health and said the Catholic faithful are united in prayer for his recovery.
