Pope Francis, 88, is spending his seventh night in hospital after being admitted with double pneumonia and a polymicrobial infection. In a latest update, the Vatican stated that the pontiff’s condition is “slightly improving” and his blood analyses are stable.
Francis was hospitalized on February 14 after struggling with breathing difficulties for several days. The clinical situation is described as “complex,” but the Vatican has assured that he will stay in hospital until necessary to address it.
A senior Catholic prelate, Cardinal Juan Jose Omella, expressed hope for the pope’s recovery, stating, “I think there is a feeling of hope, and he will come through it, thank God.” Italian Archbishop Giuseppe Satriano called Francis a “fighter” who will “win this battle.”
The pontiff has received messages of support from around the world, including visits from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, his first known VIP visitor in hospital. Meloni reported that Francis was “alert and responsive” during their meeting.
Francis has battled various health issues over the years, but the latest update offers a glimmer of hope for his recovery.
