Pope Francis remains hospitalized after undergoing a critical but stable CT scan on Tuesday. The Vatican announced the news, saying Francis’s condition is “critical, but stable” despite being diagnosed with pneumonia.
Francis, 88, returned to work briefly in the evening, making a phone call and expressing gratitude for prayers from around the world. He has been receiving high flows of oxygen and blood transfusions since his hospitalization on February 14 due to bronchitis that worsened into pneumonia.
Doctors have warned that Francis’ prognosis is guarded, citing sepsis as the main threat given his age, lung disease, and fragility. His condition is being closely monitored, with a recent test showing early, slight kidney insufficiency that remains under control.
Francis had a peaceful night’s rest in the hospital following a respiratory crisis on Saturday evening. He attended Mass on Sunday, showcasing his alertness and responsiveness despite the risks associated with pneumonia.
The pope’s extended hospital stay surpasses the longest duration of his papacy, exceeding 10 days at Gemelli Hospital in 2021 after he underwent colon surgery. Church leaders have acknowledged Francis’ short time left, but Vatican officials remain tight-lipped about the Pope’s prognosis.
