Pope Francis remained stable in the hospital on Sunday, though his clinical prognosis remains “guarded,” according to the Vatican. The 88-year-old pope is recovering from double pneumonia after a bout of bronchitis worsened and turned into a complex infection.
Francis attended Mass with those taking care of him at Gemelli hospital, alternating between rest and prayer. He also met with Vatican officials, including Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, though these meetings are part of his regular weekly schedule.
The Vatican said Francis has been receiving high-flow oxygen therapy since Saturday, without the need for non-invasive mechanical ventilation. His white blood cell levels remain low, indicating no signs of infection. Doctors have reported that he is eating and drinking normally, with a “good response” in his gas exchange levels during periods off the ventilator.
Francis gave his Sunday blessing in written form, expressing gratitude for prayers from around the world and asking for the faithful to pray for peace. He also addressed his condition, saying it has taught him to trust in the Lord even more. The Vatican said Francis’ medical condition “remained stable” on Saturday, with no fever or signs of elevated white blood cells.
Despite the guarded prognosis, Francis’ recovery is being closely monitored by doctors. His hospitalization comes during the Vatican’s Holy Year, which is drawing pilgrims to Rome from around the world.
