Pope Francis Undergoes Bronchoscopy After Respiratory Issues

Pope Francis, 88, has had two episodes of acute respiratory failure due to “significant accumulation” of mucus in his lungs and a bronchospasm akin to an asthma attack, according to the Vatican. The Holy Father was hospitalized on February 14 with a severe respiratory infection that triggered other complications.

Doctors performed two bronchoscopies to evaluate his air passages before resuming non-invasive mechanical ventilation. Despite this, the prognosis remains reserved due to ongoing infection issues. Vatican sources described the situation as calm initially but worsened in the afternoon.

The Pope’s clinical picture is complex, and it’s unclear when he will be released from hospital. His written message issued earlier today thanked his doctors and expressed gratitude for prayers from well-wishers before praying for peace in Ukraine and elsewhere.

The Pope’s absence has been prolonged due to the ongoing health issues, with more than two weeks out of public view marking the longest such period during his 12-year papacy.
