Pope Francis Visits Corsica Amid Mediterranean Crisis

Pope Francis’ one-day visit to Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean, will focus on highlighting local traditions and migrant deaths and wars. The visit comes as thousands of migrants have perished in the region.

Francis will address over 400 participants at a conference on popular religiosity in the Mediterranean before visiting the 17th-century cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta to meet with clergy and celebrate Mass. He will also stop by the statue of the Madonuccia, which is said to protect Corsica from the plague.

The pope’s brief visit is his third to France, where he has often referred to the tragedy of migration, calling it “Europe’s largest cemetery.” Francis deliberately skipped the grand reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris earlier this month, choosing instead to emphasize his priorities on supporting those at the periphery.
