Pope Leo XIV Celebrates Inaugural Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica

Pope Leo XIV will celebrate his inaugural mass on Sunday in Vatican City. The mass, called the Holy Mass for the Beginning of the Pontificate, is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. local time (4 a.m. ET). Thousands of people are expected to gather outside St. Peter’s Basilica.

Before the mass, Pope Leo XIV will wave to the crowd. During the service, he will receive two important symbols: the Petrine Pallium and the Fisherman’s Ring. The Pallium represents the pope’s responsibility to shepherd the church, while the Fisherman’s Ring signifies his role as successor to St. Peter.

Following the mass, Pope Leo XIV will deliver a homily and lead a prayer called Regina Caeli. He will then greet delegations and guests, including Vice President JD Vance, his wife Usha Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
