Pope Francis has called for negotiations between Ukraine and Russia to end the ongoing war triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In his Christmas Day address, he emphasized the need for “boldness” to initiate dialogue to achieve a just and lasting peace.
The Pope’s appeal comes amidst a major Russian attack on Ukraine’s energy facilities, which involved at least 184 missiles and drones. This incident is the latest escalation of violence in the conflict that has resulted in significant loss of life.
Ukraine had previously rejected the Pope’s offer for Kyiv to negotiate an end to the war, saying it needed “the courage to raise the white flag.” However, the Pope continues to advocate for a ceasefire and dialogue between the two nations.
In addition to Ukraine, the Pope also expressed concern over the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. He called for a ceasefire in Gaza and urged the release of hostages held by Hamas. His comments were made despite criticism from Israel, which deemed his previous descriptions of their actions as “cruelty.”
The Pope’s message of peace and hope extends beyond Ukraine, with him also reaching out to Christian communities in Syria and Lebanon, who are facing uncertainty due to recent regime changes and conflict.
His efforts aim to bring an end to the ongoing violence and promote a lasting peace between nations.
