Portillo’s Reopens Dining Room After Fatal Crash, Calls For Safety Measures

Portillo’s restaurant reopened its dining room Monday, three weeks after a fatal crash that killed a toddler and injured 12 others. The law firm representing the family of the 2-year-old boy said the establishment should have had concrete parking bumpers or protective safety bollards to prevent the accident.

The July 30 crash occurred when a car driven by a woman from Michigan slammed through the restaurant’s entrance, leaving 12 people injured and the toddler dead. The firm stated that Portillo’s design choices prioritized its own side of the building over the health and well-being of patrons.

Other businesses nearby, including Raising Cane’s and Walmart, already have protective bollards installed in front of their entrances. The law firm is calling for public officials and private property owners to implement safety measures such as bollards, parking bumpers, and restrictive parking spots to prevent future accidents.

The village president has promised to consider new safety measures after the tragedy, including barriers at Portillo’s entrance. However, no charges have been filed in connection with the accident yet. The law firm is seeking justice for the family and wants to ensure that such an incident never happens again.
