Portugal Set for Snap General Election Amid Scandal Surrounding PM Luís Montenegro

Portugal will return to the polls for a third time in less than three years, as Prime Minister Luís Montenegro’s government faces intense scrutiny over his family’s business activities. The snap election was triggered by Montenegro’s response to accusations of wrongdoing or ethical breaches.

Despite staging a vote of confidence in March, Montenegro lost and called for fresh elections. Polls suggest the outcome may be similar to last year’s election, with the ruling Democratic Alliance coalition leading with around 33% support.

The main issues in play are housing, pensions, immigration, healthcare, and crime, with Portugal’s housing crisis a dominant theme. The opposition Socialist party and far-right Chega party also contest the election.

Chega’s leader, André Ventura, has faced criticism for his party’s handling of allegations against some members, including accusations of stealing, drunk-driving, and soliciting underage sex. However, he remains undeterred in his attacks on Portugal’s Roma community.

The election outcome remains uncertain, with some predicting a narrow victory for the ruling coalition. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has stated that governability is more important than who wins the election.
