Postal Service Protests Erupt Amid Trump Plan and Privatization Talks

Thousands of postal workers and their supporters rallied nationwide over the weekend in opposition to proposals to dismantle the US Postal Service (USPS) and slash jobs. The rallies came after President Donald Trump announced plans to merge the agency with the Commerce Department, while Elon Musk’s team proposed trimming 10,000 USPS jobs.

The USPS employs 635,000 workers and lost $9.5 billion last year. Critics argue that privatization would compromise the agency’s independence and threaten its long history. The protests were fueled by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s letter to Congress, which revealed an agreement with Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.

“We had an election in November, and some people voted for President Trump,” said National Association of Letter Carriers President Brian Renfroe. “But you know what none of them voted for? To dismantle the Postal Service.” Renfroe rejected plans to privatize or slash jobs at the agency, which dates back to Benjamin Franklin’s appointment as postmaster general in 1775.

Protesters and lawmakers alike expressed outrage over DeJoy’s plan, with Rep. Gerald Connolly accusing the Postmaster General of allowing Musk’s team to “infiltrate” the agency and undermine its services. The rallies marked a significant show of support for the USPS, which has become an institution in American life.
