A 24-year-old woman has been charged with the murder of a 36-year-old USPS worker who was stabbed to death inside a deli in Harlem on Thursday afternoon. Jaia Cruz will face charges for the killing of Ray Hodges, according to police.
Hodges, who was delivering mail at the time, was attacked after a dispute broke out between two customers over who ordered first. The incident occurred at 168 Lenox Avenue and left Hodges with multiple stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with postal workers arriving on the scene visibly shaken. “He was a nice young man,” said one worker, who wished to remain anonymous. The deli workers also reported that the dispute began over a sandwich and who placed their order first.
The United States Postal Inspection Service confirmed that Hodges was assigned to Manhattan and was the victim of a homicide. Police are investigating the incident, which is ongoing. A weapon has been recovered in connection with the crime.
