A rally was held at the US Postal Service facility in North Charleston on Sunday, where around 200,000 USPS letter carriers deliver mail to nearly 169 million addresses across America. The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) representatives, including veterans, gathered to express strong opposition to President Donald Trump’s reported plan to dismantle the USPS Board of Governors and privatize the postal service.
The move would jeopardize mail affordability, reliability, and put millions of jobs at risk, according to NALC Vice President John Crader. If enacted, it could also affect veterans who rely on the USPS for prescription deliveries, as well as those in rural areas with limited access to internet services.
Crader emphasized that the USPS is a vital institution, older than the country itself, and plays a crucial role in delivering mail to remote locations where private companies like UPS and FedEx do not operate. He urged the public to be aware of how important the service provided by postal workers and to support their efforts to preserve it.
The rally drew current and retired postal workers, community members, and veterans, who expressed concern over the potential impact on the mailing industry, shipping costs, and employment opportunities. Despite uncertainty surrounding the plan’s details, the group is united in their opposition to privatization and will continue to monitor the situation to protect the USPS and its employees.
NALC President Michael Hamilton stated that the postal service has been serving the public for over 100 years and should not be privatized if it is already working effectively. The rally highlights the importance of preserving the USPS as a vital component of American society, ensuring that mail services continue to reach every address nationwide.
