Postal workers across the United States have rallied against plans to privatize or restructure the US Postal Service (USPS), warning that any such effort would be a threat to jobs and the service Americans rely on. The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) planned rallies in over 200 cities, with thousands of postal workers joining protests in major cities including Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C.
The USPS has faced funding issues for years and has been a point of contention for many administrations. However, the current plans to privatize or restructure the agency are sparking widespread opposition from postal workers and lawmakers alike.
Representatives Maxine Waters, Dick Durbin, Tina Smith, and Al Green have joined protests in support of the postal workers, while President Donald Trump and Elon Musk have indicated their willingness to privatize the service. The NALC has described these plans as a “direct threat” to 640,000 postal employees and millions of households and businesses.
The USPS employs over 600,000 people, making it one of the largest employers in the country. Any effort to privatize or restructure the agency would likely face significant opposition from lawmakers and the public.
The situation remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: postal workers are fighting to protect their jobs and the service they provide to Americans. As Senator Tina Smith said, “Musk and Trump need to stay the hell away from USPS.” The fate of the USPS hangs in the balance as the debate continues.
