Postmaster General’s Cost-Cutting Plan Raises Privatization Fears

US Postal Service Partnership with DOGE Sparks Concerns Over Privatization and Job Cuts

US Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has announced a partnership between the USPS and the Department of Government Efficiency, which aims to reduce costs by 10,000 workers. The move has sparked fears that the agency is on a path toward privatization. DeJoy cited “mismanagement” of retirement assets and unfunded mandates as issues to be addressed.

However, Democrats in the House Oversight Committee have expressed alarm over the partnership, warning it could lead to the privatization of the Postal Service and undermine its universal service obligation. The National Association of Letter Carriers has also condemned the plan, stating that “common sense solutions” are needed rather than privatization efforts that would threaten 640,000 jobs.

Critics have long accused DeJoy’s predecessor, as well as Trump, of attempting to privatize the USPS through dubious means. Elon Musk, who is part of the DOGE partnership, has also expressed support for privatizing the Postal Service and Amtrak. The move has been met with concerns from lawmakers and advocacy groups.
