A planned power cable outage occurred on the Estlink 2 interconnector between Finland and Estonia, reducing available capacity by nearly half.
Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo stated that authorities are investigating the incident despite it not affecting Finland’s electricity supply. The interruption followed a string of outages in the Baltic Sea region, including power cables, gas pipelines, and telecom links.
Fingrid control room manager Arto Pahki confirmed an investigation has been initiated into the cause of the outage. The Estlink 2 interconnector initially had a capacity of 1,016 MW but saw its available capacity reduced to 358 megawatts after the unplanned break in service at 10:26 GMT.
The incident did not disrupt Finland’s electricity supply and authorities have been on high alert for potential sabotage following recent outages.
