Power Rankings: Genesis Invitational

The Genesis Invitational, a Signature Event of the PGA Tour, is set to begin at Torrey Pines’ South Course. The 72-golfer field will compete for a $4 million prize fund and 700 FedExCup points, with a 36-hole cut and 29 players from the Farmers Insurance Open also in attendance.

The course, which hosted the 2021 U.S. Open, is expected to be just as challenging as it was during the Farmers event three weeks ago. The par-72 will measure 7,765 yards, with thick rough and Poa annua greens that will run 13 feet on the Stimpmeter.

This is a different tournament from its predecessors, however, due to the smaller field size of just 72 golfers. A 36-hole cut means the low 50 and ties, as well as all golfers within 10 strokes of the lead at the midpoint, will play the final round.

The Genesis Invitational has a rich history dating back to its inaugural tournament in 1926. This is the 98th edition of the event, which has been hosted by several locations in the Los Angeles area before moving to Torrey Pines’ South Course for this year’s event. Notably, Tiger Woods was set to be the host but withdrew due to unforeseen circumstances.

Weather conditions will play a significant role in the tournament, with rain and strong winds expected on Thursday, followed by calmer conditions during the weekend. The final scores will likely be affected by these weather patterns, making for an intriguing event that could see players separated into two distinct halves of their performance.
