PowerSchool Breach Exposes Nationally Sourced Student Data

A recent cybersecurity breach at PowerSchool, a leading education technology company, may have exposed the sensitive information of millions of students across the US. The breach occurred through the PowerSource customer support portal using compromised login credentials, allowing hackers to gain access to PowerSchool’s Student Information System (SIS) data.

Two districts, Jackson Public Schools and Napoleon Community Schools in Jackson County, have reported their student data as being affected by the breach. Despite this, officials claim that measures are being taken to prevent further unauthorized access or misuse of the compromised data.

PowerSchool has assured customers that all relevant services, except for the SIS database, were unaffected by the breach. The company has also stated that they do not anticipate the data being shared publicly and believe it has been deleted without any further replication or dissemination.

In response to the incident, Jenison Public Schools in Ottawa County will be taking additional security measures, including enhancing firewall protections, restricting vendor access, and enacting ongoing monitoring and safeguards.
