PowerSchool Data Breach Exposed Personal Info on Long Island Schools

A data breach involving PowerSchool, a widely used educational software, may have exposed sensitive information of students and staff across Long Island. The company claims that Social Security numbers and medical information were compromised.

The impact of the breach is not yet clear, with only school districts in Massapequa, Smithtown Central, Nassau BOCES, Uniondale, and Middle Country confirming they use PowerSchool. A spokesperson for PowerSchool refused to disclose which districts are affected.

Security expert Adam Schwam warns that hackers can use compromised information from 18-year-olds onwards to open credit cards. He advises individuals to sign up for credit monitoring and identity reporting programs as a precautionary measure.

The FBI is now involved, with Smithtown Central stating it has received confirmation of the agency’s involvement. However, News 12 has yet to receive a response from the FBI.
