PowerShell 2.0 Leaves Windows Behind

Microsoft has officially bid farewell to PowerShell 2.0, marking the end of an era for command-line tool on Windows. The announcement comes in the form of a Windows Insider update.

PowerShell, first introduced as a scripting tool, has evolved significantly since its debut. However, version 2.0 lingered due to backward compatibility concerns. Despite being deprecated in 2017, it remained available alongside newer versions.

In 2017, Microsoft stated that while PowerShell 2.0 would no longer be actively developed, it would remain in Windows until dependencies were mitigated. Now, with the release of Windows 11, PowerShell 2.0 has been removed from most current Insider Preview builds.

Microsoft encourages users to upgrade to newer versions, such as version 5.1 on modern Windows editions and PowerShell 7.x for cross-platform compatibility. A specific timeline for its removal from Windows Server is yet to be announced.
