Pregnancy Painkiller Linked to ADHD Risk in Children

A recent study published in Nature Mental Health found that mothers who took Acetaminophen during pregnancy had a higher risk of their children developing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The research, conducted on 307 African American mother-child pairs between 2006 and 2011, revealed that children born to mothers who used Acetaminophen were 18% more likely to develop ADHD. Specifically, daughters were at a greater risk than sons, with the study finding six times more significant effects on female children. The study suggests that the FDA may need to reevaluate its approval of Acetaminophen for pregnant women due to the lack of evidence on its long-term neurodevelopmental impacts.
