Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed frustration with a rule that allowed Diogo Jota’s 57th-minute goal in the Merseyside derby to stand, as the Reds reclaimed their 12-point lead at the Premier League summit.
Everton boss David Moyes claimed Jota’s strike was offside against Luis Díaz’s teammate James Tarkowski’s clearance, but a review of the rulebook revealed that Díaz did not need to be “clearly attempting to play a ball” when he regained possession to set up Jota for the winner.
Slot acknowledged the rule is counterproductive, as it forces his center-backs to head the ball away, rather than playing out from defense. He credited the linesman’s correct decision in this case, saying “the execution of the rule was fortunately for us today, well done.”
Moyes disagreed, stating that Liverpool’s goal should have been disallowed due to offside. Despite the loss, he praised his team’s resilience and acknowledged a few missed opportunities.
Slot also declined to comment on an earlier Tarkowski challenge, which some deemed borderline. However, when asked if he was surprised the challenge wasn’t given a red card, Slot replied that “there’s no need for me to comment” as many already shared their opinion on the decision.
