US President Joe Biden has granted a pardon to his son Hunter Biden, sparing him from federal prison time. The 54-year-old pleaded guilty to nine federal tax charges in September for falsifying records and failing to file returns.
Hunter faced up to 17 years in prison but was likely to serve no more than 36 months under sentencing experts’ estimates. In June, he was found guilty of three felony counts related to a firearms application, with a maximum sentence of 25 years.
The pardon comes after the scheduled hearings for his gun conviction and tax charges were set to take place on December 13 and 16 in Delaware. Hunter’s legal team has now informed both judges that the pardons have rendered these hearings unnecessary.
Note: The term “moot” was removed as it may be considered an overly technical or specialized word, and instead replaced with more straightforward language to convey the same meaning.
