Historian Allan Lichtman, who has correctly predicted election outcomes for nearly 50 years, was stunned to see Donald Trump win the presidential election despite his predictions. Lichtman, a professor at American University, had forecasted that Vice President Kamala Harris would narrowly defeat Trump.
Lichtman described the outcome as “unfathomable” in a podcast interview with his son, Samuel, which drew over 1.1 million viewers. He attributed the unexpected result to voters’ focus on democracy rising as a major issue and issues like abortion and immigration.
Despite being shocked by the outcome, Lichtman remained hopeful, saying that democracy can be destroyed but also restored. The historian had initially predicted Trump’s vice-president, J.D. Vance, would succeed him due to health concerns.
Lichtman’s loss marks the second time he has failed to accurately predict the winner of a presidential election, following his incorrect prediction in 2000.
