Prince Harry has concluded a landmark visit to Angola, where he reinvigorated his commitment to a mine-free future and honored his mother’s legacy with The HALO Trust. Nearly three decades after Princess Diana brought global attention to the dangers of landmines, Prince Harry followed in her footsteps by supporting Angola’s efforts to clear remaining remnants of war.
The Duke visited remote villages, including Mawano, where he taught local children how to recognize and avoid landmines as part of HALO’s community outreach program. He repeated safety instructions in Portuguese, emphasizing the importance of protecting future generations from the harms of war.
Prince Harry partnered with the Angolan government to announce a new three-year commitment to support landmine clearance, making it the largest single donor in Angola. The partnership builds on his earlier visit in 2019, during which over 20,000 landmines were cleared in the Cuando Cubango region.
The Duke highlighted the strategic importance of ongoing clearance efforts, particularly around key regions like the Lobito Corridor and the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage site. He emphasized that this work is not just about removing explosives but also enabling opportunity, development, and long-term peace.
Prince Harry expressed gratitude to local HALO staff and international donors, including the UK and US, for their support. The CEO of HALO Trust praised President Lourenço’s leadership and Prince Harry’s personal commitment, saying that this renewed partnership brings them closer to a mine-free Angola.
Despite over 1,000 remaining minefields, Prince Harry urged all donors to stand with Angola in fighting the job, emphasizing that it’s not just about landmines but also about healing the last wounds of war and giving future generations peace.
