Prince Harry’s charity, Sentebale, has been hit with criticism from its former chairwoman, Dr Sophie Chandauka, who claims the royal’s brand is “toxic” and hindered the organization. The charity was co-founded by Prince Harry in 2006 to help people living with HIV and AIDS in southern Africa.
Dr Chandauka said she felt tension with Prince Harry a year ago and that his departure from the charity was “harassment and bullying at scale.” She claimed the royal’s team asked her to defend his wife, Meghan, from negative publicity and that Prince Harry wanted to “force a failure” and then come back in.
The charity has confirmed a “restructuring” of its board following the resignation of several trustees. Dr Chandauka had reported concerns about abuse of power, bullying, sexism, and racism to the UK Charity Commission. The commission said it was aware of governance issues and is assessing the situation to determine regulatory steps.
Prince Harry and his co-founder, Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, stepped down from their roles due to a breakdown in the relationship between the charity’s trustees and Dr Chandauka. In a joint statement, they described the decision as “devastating” for them and said they would be sharing concerns with the Charity Commission.
