A US court filing has revealed that Prince Harry’s immigration records are still being kept secret, despite an ongoing legal battle between a conservative group and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The Heritage Foundation is seeking to know whether Prince Harry lied about his past drug use on his immigration forms.
The case revolves around Prince Harry’s entry into the US in 2020 when he moved to Southern California with his wife Meghan Markle. The DHS has largely rejected the group’s Freedom of Information Act request, citing “intense public interest” in knowing whether Prince Harry received special treatment during the application process.
A recent court filing from the DHS chief FOIA officer stated that releasing Prince Harry’s exact status could lead to harassment and unwanted media attention. The judge is trying to strike a balance between revealing too much information and redacting it excessively.
The decision has sparked debate about the need for transparency in government records, particularly when it comes to high-profile individuals like Prince Harry.
In 2023, Prince Harry’s memoir “Spare” revealed his past drug use, including cocaine and cannabis. The US routinely asks about drug use on its visa applications, but acknowledgment of past drug use doesn’t necessarily bar people from entering or staying in the country.
