Prince Harry’s lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch’s London tabloids over phone hacking charges was adjourned on Tuesday due to last-minute settlement talks between the two sides. The trial, which could be the last major legal reckoning for victims of Britain’s phone hacking scandal, has been halted until Wednesday.
The case involves allegations that News Group Newspapers and its journalists engaged in unlawful gathering of information about Prince Harry, as well as other prominent figures. Lawyers for both sides claimed that further arguments would jeopardize a potential settlement that could avoid weeks of costly litigation.
News Group Newspapers has settled similar claims with hundreds of other plaintiffs over the years, often without admitting liability. The company’s lead lawyer, Anthony Hudson, said that a settlement would spare News Group from substantial legal costs and allow them to maintain their reputation.
Prince Harry, who is expected to take the stand in late February, had initially stated that he was willing to risk heavy financial losses if it meant holding the tabloids accountable for years of predatory behavior. However, with his resources and public profile, he believes he has a rare chance to achieve this.
The case marks the latest move by Rupert Murdoch’s media empire to settle allegations without admitting wrongdoing. In April 2023, Fox News paid $787.5 million to settle a defamation suit over disinformation about the 2020 election.
As the settlement talks continue, both sides appear to have powerful incentives to reach an agreement. The outcome will determine whether Prince Harry and other victims of phone hacking can receive justice and accountability for their experiences.
