Prince Harry appeared in a London court on Tuesday for a two-day hearing about his government-funded security arrangements, which he lost after stepping down as a senior royal in 2020. The Duke of Sussex claimed that without taxpayer-funded protection, he and his family are endangered due to social media hostility and relentless news coverage.
Harry’s lawyers argued that the loss of security has deepened tensions between him and his father, King Charles, who they say could intervene to ensure protection is extended. However, Buckingham Palace previously stated that the idea that Charles can get involved in any capacity on behalf of his son is “wholly incorrect.”
The sovereign has no governmental power in the UK, and Harry believes that if he were to become king, he would have more influence over security matters. Despite this, tensions between father and son have worsened since Harry and his wife Meghan quit royal duties.
Harry’s lawyers cited examples of serious security threats, including a document from Al Qaeda that called for his assassination and a dangerous pursuit by paparazzi in New York City. The couple claimed they were forced to step back from their roles as full-time official members of the royal family due to the lack of protection.
Buckingham Palace declined to comment on security matters. However, insiders claim that King Charles stopped answering Harry’s phone calls and letters and has not been involved in his legal battles. Experts say the king is limited by his role as monarch and lacks the energy and inclination for a potentially difficult conversation with his son.
