A US judge has ordered the government to release much of Prince Harry’s visa application, sparking controversy over possible special treatment from the Biden administration. The ruling comes after months of legal wrangling between The Heritage Foundation and the government.
The case centers on Prince Harry’s admission of drug use in his memoir Spare, with The Heritage Foundation claiming that this should have disqualified him from obtaining a visa. The foundation wants to know if Harry lied or received a special waiver from the Biden administration.
Next week, redacted versions of Harry’s application documents will be made public after a Donald Trump-appointed judge ruled that the government must disclose them by Tuesday. One possibility is that Harry has an A-1 visa, typically reserved for heads of state, which could render the challenge moot.
However, this could also fuel further controversy over whether and why the Biden administration decided to accommodate Prince Harry. The Heritage Foundation claims that Harry revealed he had used hard, soft, and psychedelic drugs in his memoir. British TV star Nigella Lawson was denied entry to the US in 2013 after admitting to drug use.
The Trump administration has a history of criticizing Prince Harry and his wife Meghan. The feud began in 2016, when Meghan expressed her contempt for Trump on Comedy Central. Since then, Trump has made several public comments about the couple, including predictions that they would divorce and calling them “spoiled apples”.
