A private spacecraft, Resilience, launched on January 15th and successfully landed on the moon last year. If successful this time, it will be the first non-US firm to touch down on lunar soil, marking a historic milestone for Japanese space company ispace. The Resilience lander traveled beyond the moon into deep space before returning to lunar orbit in May.
To navigate the challenging northern plain of Mare Frigoris, which has never been explored by a previous mission, the probe took a winding path. It will now attempt to complete its complex maneuvers above the lunar surface and begin its landing sequence on June 5th at around 7:20pm BST. The landing is expected to occur an hour later in Mare Frigoris. The attempt will be streamed live on ispace’s YouTube channel.
