Russia’s national airline Aeroflot has cancelled dozens of flights after pro-Ukrainian hackers claimed responsibility for the cyber-attack on its IT systems. Hacking group Silent Crow said it collaborated with a Belarusian group, Cyberpartisans, to carry out the attack.
Silent Crow claims its operation destroyed Aeroflot’s IT systems, causing widespread delays and cancellations of flights within Russia, as well as routes to Belarus and Armenia. The airline has also reported issues with its information system.
The Belarusian group Cyberpartisans described itself as fighting for “liberation from dictatorial rule” in Belarus. However, it is unclear if the claims made by Silent Crow and Cyberpartisans are accurate.
A Russian MP expressed concern over the attack, saying it highlights the “digital war” being waged against Russia. The Russian prosecutor’s office has confirmed a criminal investigation into the hacker attack, while passengers will be transferred to flights operated by other carriers.
This attack is a rare instance of a major Russian company being affected by cyber-attacks, with potential consequences for tens of thousands of civilians.
